After much troubleshooting and looking for solutions on the web involving deleting preferences etc it turned out that when I turned off Bluetooth Wi-Fi was restored in that it was fast and useable. When you click on a specific area such as sound settings, Control Center shows more related options - in this case, sound output devices available.
